Don't panic

Bad news sure spreads fast. So if you've heard a rumour that Beau's just about to have an operation (not true!), here's a quick note to fill you in.

Our maternal and child health nurse was concerned that Beau had a very unusual crawl at his 12 month check up (which went well in all other respects... he's still on the 70th - 75th percentile for height and weight and 95th for head size!!!), and referred me to a paediatric physio.

The physio looked at a range of aspects of his physical development:

  • he doesn't pull to stand
  • when he's placed in a standing position he only bears weight on one leg
  • he's never really rolled very much
  • he can't easily move from lying to a sitting position
  • he has a very unusual crawl where he pretty much just pulls himself along with his arms
  • he grimaced when she did an extended rotation of his legs
After much deliberation we've decided not to send him back for a refund.

Instead, we're getting some x-rays done next week and will see an paediatric orthopaedic surgeon soon after then. Just the word 'surgeon' sends a chill down my spine. It may be nothing, he may just be a slow developer. But he also may have hip dysplasia. It would be a very late diagnosis (it's usually picked up in the first few months after birth), and would most likely require casts and possibly surgery as well. But we will just have to wait and see.

The good news is that if it is hip dysplasia, it can be treated.

I will keep you posted.

xx
Kathryn
