In the clear

Beau had his x-ray today and I'm SOOOOOO relieved to tell you that his hips are normal and he doesn't have hip dysplasia. Yay! Yay! Yay!

It's back to the physio for us now, and probably months of exercises to get our little man moving.

The question on everyone's lips is, do Lulu Lemon make boys size 1 exercise gear?

Don't panic

Bad news sure spreads fast. So if you've heard a rumour that Beau's just about to have an operation (not true!), here's a quick note to fill you in.

Our maternal and child health nurse was concerned that Beau had a very unusual crawl at his 12 month check up (which went well in all other respects... he's still on the 70th - 75th percentile for height and weight and 95th for head size!!!), and referred me to a paediatric physio.

The physio looked at a range of aspects of his physical development:

  • he doesn't pull to stand
  • when he's placed in a standing position he only bears weight on one leg
  • he's never really rolled very much
  • he can't easily move from lying to a sitting position
  • he has a very unusual crawl where he pretty much just pulls himself along with his arms
  • he grimaced when she did an extended rotation of his legs
After much deliberation we've decided not to send him back for a refund.

Instead, we're getting some x-rays done next week and will see an paediatric orthopaedic surgeon soon after then. Just the word 'surgeon' sends a chill down my spine. It may be nothing, he may just be a slow developer. But he also may have hip dysplasia. It would be a very late diagnosis (it's usually picked up in the first few months after birth), and would most likely require casts and possibly surgery as well. But we will just have to wait and see.

The good news is that if it is hip dysplasia, it can be treated.

I will keep you posted.

xx

Beau's birthday present

It's Beau's first birthday today. I can barely believe that a whole year has passed. A year ago right now I was in labour (with only one side of my body anesthetised – I will never forget it!) waiting to meet my new baby.

I would redo this last year of my life in a heartbeat. Beau has the perfect name for his nature. He is such a treasure and a joy. He laughs so readily, and is so contented and cuddly. Fingers crossed he doesn’t go the way of his father and turn into a terrible toddler!

Beau gave me the most wonderful gift this morning. For the first time since he was born he SLEPT THROUGH THE NIGHT LAST NIGHT!!!

Happy Birthday my beautiful Beau. I love you with all my heart.

Tickle your underwear

Some of my favourite lost in translation moments of late:

Jasmine singing to Beau:
Round and round the garden
Like a teddy bear
One step, two step
TICKLE YOUR UNDERWEAR!!!

Location: Cafe
Mummy: What sort of cake would you like, Jasmine
Jasmine: A TALL one!

Location: Jasmine's bedroom, Beau's bum-shuffling over to the wall stickers to try to peel them off for the hundredth time
Mummy: Beau, you are out of control!
Jasmine: Where's the troll?

Location: Dinner, Beau whining to get out of the high chair
Mummy: Beau, stop it! You're driving mummy crazy!
Jasmine: Beau going to time out now mummy?
